DRINKING WATER DISINFECTION

Not everyone knows this, but the presence of chlorine in the composition of a chemical substance does not always mean that the substance contains free chlorine, i.e., the chlorine molecule is capable of being released. Let's consider several examples:

• The first example is the well-known "Chlorine" (the correct name for the disinfectant is sodium hypochlorite), with the chemical formula NaOCl. In this chemical compound, after application, the chlorine molecule is released and can be transported with water into the environment or, for example, into the human body.

• As a second example, let's consider a chemical substance called sodium chloride, commonly known as ordinary table salt, with the chemical formula NaCl. Note that in this chemical substance, chlorine (Cl) is present, but in this case, the chlorine molecule is bound and not released. This allows the consumption of salt in food without the risk of chemical poisoning with chlorine.

• The same applies to chlorine dioxide, with the chemical formula ClO2. In the composition of chlorine dioxide, the chlorine molecule (Cl) is also present, but it is firmly bound to two oxygen molecules (O2), preventing the chlorine molecule from being released.

Thus, just like ordinary table salt, chlorine dioxide does not contain free chlorine and is therefore non-toxic, unlike sodium hypochlorite. This is why chlorine dioxide is considered the most modern and environmentally friendly disinfectant, widely used in the food industry, medicine, and, of course, for purifying drinking water.

Chlorine dioxide is considered the most environmentally friendly and safe disinfectant. Chlorine dioxide is completely biodegradable, and when exposed to open air, it dissolves completely within a few hours, leaving no chemical by-products. Chlorine dioxide is even used in aquariums and water bodies (while adhering to recommended dosages), where it causes no harm to plants or fish.

It is extremely important! The use of any disinfectant requires careful attention and adherence to safety guidelines.
